Melchizedek

What if a figure who appears in only three verses of the Old Testament turns out to be one of the most powerful previews of Jesus Christ in all of Scripture? That is exactly what we discover when we encounter Melchizedek, the mysterious king of Salem and priest of the Most High God who meets Abraham in Genesis 14. This sermon takes us deep into Hebrews 7 to unpack why this enigmatic figure captivated the attention of the New Testament writers and why he should captivate ours. His very name means king of righteousness, and the city he ruled carries the meaning of peace, both titles that point unmistakably to Jesus, the one Isaiah called the Prince of Peace and Jeremiah called the Lord of Righteousness. We explore how the mystery surrounding Melchizedek, his unknown origins, his lack of genealogy, his seemingly timeless existence, is not a gap in the biblical record but a deliberate signpost pointing us toward the eternal Son of God. For those of us on a faith journey, this is a reminder that Scripture is layered with meaning, and that God was weaving the story of Jesus into the fabric of history long before Bethlehem.
